How To Build an Aquarium Backup System

If you are owner of a beautiful fish tank and you love what you have created, have you ever wondered what could happen if the electricity should happen to fail? This is where an aquarium backup system would protect your fish and the time you have invested in them. You can buy all sorts of generators to keep your fish alive in a situation like this, but you can also build your own.

First you have to find an old or used UPS that is working well. You would probably find one on an old computer, as they are used to protect computers in case of an electrical outage. Always check the voltage of the UPS you find and make sure it is a 12-volt battery. Check the wattage and check to see if it's compatible for where you're going to need it, such as the wattage on your fish tank. The UPS will not handle any more wattage than what it was made for. Buy a 12-volt battery. A car battery will serve the purpose, but a marine battery would be better for longer periods of time.

Check the connectors on the UPS and the battery to see if they are compatible. Buy two connectors and it is best to take the battery with you when you buy them. This is a way of being sure you have the right ones. Buy two metals hose clamps. You will use these clamps to connect the wires from the UPS to the battery terminals. Cut two pieces of 12 gauge wire in the length. You need to run from the battery to the UPS. Strip off the ends of the wire so they can be attached to the terminals.

Attach each end of the wire to the connectors and then clamp the other two ends to the battery terminals. Remember when you attaching the battery terminal wires to the UPS battery wire that black is negative and red is positive. Plug your UPS cord into an outlet in your home and then turn it on. This should tell you if it's running normally. Try plugging in a lamp to your UPS power protected outlet - the lamp should work. When you unplug your UPS from the wall, the lamp should stay on.
